Sounds of the Season.

Yesterday, our church was full of music. For the morning worship services, the choirs combined with members of the Georgia Symphony for a stunning performance of Vivaldi's Gloria. In case you're unfamiliar with it, this recording is beautiful (and it's pretty to look at, too)!

We closed worship with Angels We Have Heard on High. It's one of my favorite hymns and accompanied by organ, strings and brass, a truly joyful sound!

In the afternoon, we hosted the Alpharetta Community Chorus' Holiday Concert. It was my first time hearing this chorus and it was delightful. They invited a local high school's chamber chorus and mens' chorale to join them for a few songs. The combined choirs sang the final piece; again our sanctuary was filled with joyful sound.

Here at home, my Christmas playlist is on non-stop shuffle.

...which means I've had zero time for audiobooks and podcasts. But I added two new recordings to my Audible library this morning (this members-only freebie and a collection of PD James' holiday short stories). Must make time to listen to both soon, along with Tim Curry's wonderful performance of A Christmas Carol (because - yikes!! - less than two weeks to go!)

What's on your playlist this season?

The thing I miss the most about attending church regularly is the music. It's always so joyful and uplifting, especially at Christmas.

Music is the best part of the season and this week finds me surrounded by the music of England, Scotland, and Ireland. Such amazing music!

My Erin was (still is) a singer -- and I so miss her music in the house. Especially at Christmastime! We traipsed around to her concerts all over the place -- from the time she was a fifth grader through her college graduation. But now . . . not so much! My favorite Christmas music this year is Leslie Odom, Jr.'s "Simply Christmas." (It is . . . simply wonderful!)

I love the Vivaldi and have sung it a few times. I sing with the Oratorio Society at Eastern Illinois University and we sang the Poulanc Gloria this year, I didn't like it at first, but when sung in context with the orchestra, it really came alive for me...I've gained a new appreciation for mid-20th century music. Now I am busy with church choir rehearsals. We give a 30 minute concert prior to mid-night Mass and then sing the Mass...it is a wonderful time!

I'm listening to mostly George Winston's "December" and Loreena McKennitt's "To Drive the Cold Winter Away" which has one of my most favorite songs ever on it - "Snow." So beautiful.

Your weekend sounds so peaceful and reminded me of my childhood. As an adult I have rarely been to a Christmas concert. I'm a big fan of anything Ella and Louis!

Vivaldi is always a favorite of mine and I'd not seen the video you shared; so I shall watch/listen again and again, I'm sure. I must remember to take my CDs to the car so I have them to listen to as I drive ...Handel's Messiah is my #1 fave. At home, we listen to several all music channels from the TV; a current one is Seasonal Songs...more of the popular vein. Relaxing.
Cheers~

I enjoyed listening to Vivaldi's Gloria - more than once - just beautiful! And looking forward to Tim Curry's reading of A Christmas Carol - hard to believe Christmas is so close.
