Throwback Thursday | Travel Plans.

Sara and I had a two hour FaceTime on Saturday afternoon to nail down a few details for our trip next week. The weather forecast isn't great (rainy and chilly), but it is spring and hopefully the forecast is just plain wrong. Still, we don't have high hopes.

We have only two definite things planned to do:
1. see Claire Danes in Dry Powder Thursday evening (Sara managed to get tickets and that's really the reason for the whole trip); and
2. meet up with a friend of mine Saturday morning.

So we spent that two hours on Saturday talking about where we'd eat! Sara pulled it all into a map:

And I couldn't help thinking about how different all this is from our first trip back in April, 2008. I pored over blogs and probably even a guide book or two looking for recommendations. Apart from a quick trip (for a business lunch) in 2007, I hadn't been to New York since college and this was Sara's first time. We were definitely newbies. without iPhones, Yelp or Google Maps!

We landed at La Guardia with hotel reservations and The List.
(which I still have!)
A piece of paper - filled on the front with Places to see/Things to do and on the back with Food. We managed to have a great time and I don't remember being disappointed by anything. Although Sara was for sure disappointed by the carriage ride through Central Park (I do have to agree with her that the smell was...tough to handle!)

I compiled a day by day summary of what we did for our scrapbook.  Fun to see that three of the restaurants we tried back then are on this year's list too (Fig & Olive, Blue Ribbon Bakery and Isabella's).

We'll also see Central Park, plenty of the Village and maybe even a yarn shop or two. And we'll also ride the subway. I doubt we'll keep up the pace of that first visit, though; I'm amazed how much of the city - even Brooklyn! - we covered in just a few days.

But I'm sure we'll have fun. no matter what.

It is interesting how different trip planning is in just eight short years. I LOVE the where we'll eat map, and there might also be room on it for Knitty City and Purl Soho. I'm sure you'll have fun whatever you do and in spite of the weather because you'll be doing it together!

Stanton Social -- we had an excellent brunch there ~ 5 years ago! Beware: The Village is much more crowded than when you were last there. My son and DIL who live/work there (but not for much longer) commented on that when they walked around last weekend. Have lots of fun, though!

"Starbucks to get online" really is a relic. It's like we were in Europe or something??? lol

I remember we saw Barbara Walters and the guy who played Summer's dad on The OC at that bookstore. Rest assured the celebrity "sightings" will be more obvious and exciting this time. :)

I do not remember eating at Fig & Olive or Isabella's. Oh well.

Sounds like you will have a great time! NYC in the spring is always very windy and blustery!

I remember my first trip to NYC in 1963 and then in 1972, I spent a whole month there, attending a symposium and staying in The Village (thanks for jogging my memory - definitely a story to record!) Anyway, I had to laugh out loud about your food plans...sounds like great fun and I look forward to your reviews and following along vicariously on your travels. Enjoy! Enjoy!
Cheers~

It sounds like such a fun trip - I'm so excited for you! And I know you and Sara will be so busy having a wonderful time you won't even notice the weather. New York is so close to us but so intimidating - our only visits being to the Met for an opera. I can't wait to read about your adventure! Maybe it will inspire me to be a little more adventuresome. : )

I loved looking at your 2008 travel log! My daughter lives in the building right next to Clinton St Baking Co! She just goes down and puts her name on the list and waits in her apt! LES has come a long way since 2008! Glad you have a restaurant in that neighborhood on your current list. Downtown Yarns is near there at 45 Avenue A. Have a fantastic time!! I know your schedule is set, but if you are wandering around West Village, a stop at Jack's Wife Freda's at 50 Carmine St will not disappoint!

Oh, so fun! I love planning... and plotting a return (because you're never going to be able to do it all, and there's always something new). I haven't been to NYC in quite a few years; need to return. ;)
