Book Report | January.

When I last shared here about books and reading, I wasn't feeling very optimistic. Now nearly a full month into the new year, things are definitely looking up. For starters, I finished ten more books and all were  better than those first two:
2018 books shelved here
In fact, Sing, Unburied, Sing was amazing (my first - and only, so far - 5-star rating); I read this on my kindle and flew through the last half (one thing I do love about reading vs. listening is that it's certainly faster).

Then I discovered a new-to-me series where Sherlock Holmes is a woman named Charlotte Holmes. Some reviews give away a few more of the delightful character twists that aren't revealed until late in the first book; suffice it say I gasped in pleasant surprise more than once. I binged through the first one, A Study in Scarlett Women (audio from Overdrive) and promptly purchased the second (A Conspiracy in Belgravia). Completely worth it! and my only book purchase so far this year.

The only goal I set for 2018 reading was to buy fewer books. I've made a solid start:

I'm also tracking book format:

I expect those percentages to even out some, but with all the knitting and treadmill time ... maybe not😉

I downloaded The Immortalists on audio this morning and expect that to be my first February finish. It's early still, but it looks like February is off to a great reading start!

How has your 2018 reading been so far? any surprises?

I've been reading a LOT so far this month and some have been great (Sing Unburied Sing) and some just okay. I hardly ever buy books and pretty much borrow everything from the library.

I've been reading a lot. (I read Sing Unburied Sing last year; loved it.) I'm nearly finished with Ali Smith's Winter -- it's excellent. I've had quite a few . . . mediocre . . . books this year so far. Like Carole, I get most all of my books through the library. (Except poetry. I'm a sucker for poetry books -- and I want to own them.) XO

I've heard many great things about The Immortalists so waiting for your review. I buy audio books, but like my library and my Kindle, too. You've done a great job of reading this month! I'll make it through 6, a higher number than I thought.

I've got A Study in Scarlett Women on hold and am looking forward to it. Right now I'm finishing up another Gamache book-The Beautiful Mystery along with 2 Pat Conroy books on Overdrive waiting for me. I'm finding I need to keep one audio book going for while I'm working out and walking the dog and one e-book/book-book to read before bed. My goal for 2018 is to have a steady routine of when I read, knit, embroider, sew etc. There are so many things I enjoy doing I want to devote some amount of time to each. I am thrilled that the reading has increased-it is something I truly love.

Reading is my hibernating blanket for Jan/Feb time, always has been throughout my whole life. I’ve read 6 so far this year but there are a few trips in the coming months that’ll help it along.
Right now I am on “Magpie Murders” and waiting for some others at library, where I do tend to get most of my reading material or listening, books on tape are so nice. That is when I get most of my knitting done. (Though lately I’ve been so engrossed in the audio story that I have to frog a few stitches or rows when I get off track.)
Your female Sherlock books sound interesting . . . maybe . . .

I also just put A Study in Scarlett Women on hold! I should finish listening Little Fires on my plane ride tomorrow I hope and have Armande Gamache #3 on my ipad next up. BUT I'm now seriously considering purchasing Sing, Unburied, Sing to read instead! I love your graphics!

I've read a lot of really good books this month, including Sing, Unburied, Sing, Golden Hill, & The Woman Who Smashed Codes. I get most of my books from the library and Ali Smith's Winter should be in my hands by Friday. I'm currently reading Clementine, a biography of Winston Churchill's wife and am finding it interesting.

Rusty burns through books very quickly and his policy has been to ALWAYS borrow fiction; non-fiction books are sometimes purchased (or added to a wish/gift list). I read/listen so slowly, that I usually buy just because it's easier!! You've got a great start on your reading year.

I should buy less books, truly. But somehow if I walk into a book store and I see something I want to buy, boom, it happens. I'm trying to read through the ones I already own this year. And read more but that hasn't happened yet!

I'm glad you are liking the books you are reading -- my year seemed to start off the same way. I started a lot of books only to put them down after a few chapters. I'm happy to say that seems to be changing. I recently read News of the World, and it is still with me almost a week later -- loved it! And I love your graphics! I tend to be lazy about going to the library in the winter and don't want to brave the mall to get to the bookstore so, my books are a mix of ones I already have and Kindle. And I recently downloaded A Study in Scarlett Women. : )

I'm getting accustomed to audio books and finding them a good "go-to" for fiction...not my genre of first choice but I am slowly reconnecting...I've almost finished Sing Unburied Sing (audio) and Inspector Gamache is patiently waiting in the wings...my next challenge is to remember to clock my reads in goodreads...
Congrats on your first month's successes!
Cheers~
