Throwback Thursday | First Day of School.

...it's back to school time here big-time. A few of the local counties started this week and ours starts Monday. Of course our girls are way past those years now, but I remember well the mix of excitement, anticipation, fear and stress that accompanies the First Day of School.

My First Day was back in September 1969. We lived in Houston. I look mostly scared, not excited, don't you think?

My dress was red. Maybe one of my grandmothers made it? And no backpack or book bag for me - nope - a little pocketbook! (I wonder if my mom remembers what I carried in it? I hope a pencil!)

My mom also saved my class picture, taken the following spring. I'm on the bottom row, second from the right.

Look at all those dresses(!!), politely crossed ankles, neat (short) haircuts...and smiles! A 5x7 time capsule for sure.

I don't remember much about that first year of school except that I rode the bus.

Do you remember anything special from your first day or year of school?

Love it! I have several of those class group photos, too…good for a chuckle or two. I loved school, especially the first days, and am still nostalgic when Sept/late Aug roll around. Schools around here start in a couple weeks.

Cheers~

I was still only 4 when I started kindergarten, I turned 5 that fall. My mother walked me to school the first day and I remember how happy I was to see two friends from my street in my class. The only other thing I remember is feeling sorry for one little boy who cried the whole morning (we only went to kindergarten for a half day). I have a few memories from that year, but most of all remember loving everything about school.

I remember my dress was green. Maybe that's why I don't care for green. My school experience was overall not great. You look darling, but you do look scared!

You were so cute and you haven't changed a bit! I remember that I loved my first grade teacher, Mrs. Sykes.

How cute you are! I also hope there's a pencil in that pocketbook. I distinctly remember my plaid bookbag with buckles, a goldenrod ruled tablet ($17.00 on etsy! https://www.etsy.com/listing/225627310/2-goldenrod-elementary-ruled-paper), and a brown plaid jumper that my grandmother made. I also remember crying when I came home after the first day because I hadn't been taught to read as I had been promised; it did take a bit longer than one day. :-)

I still get that nervous feeling when September rolls around - so odd! And the big urge to buy paper and pencils and pens. Oh wait, I always have that urge - LOL! I don't really remember anything about my first day of school. I do know that all through my beginning school years - all I wanted to wear was brown. Guess I thought I could hide that way!

I remember my Mom walking in with me and reading the class list on the side of the room. She was telling me the kids that I knew in my class. I'd gone to Pre-K and K with a lot of them. I also remember going into the boys room on a dare! (First grade!)

I vividly remember my first day of first grade. We learned how to spell the work "red". My teacher was a woman named Pearl Moe. I also fondly remember Kindergarten, since we had a real fish pond, separate art room, where I loved to finger paint, and an upstairs playhouse that had windows with blue shutters that overlooked the classroom downstairs! You would never have that today, which is too bad. It was magical. I also remember having milk and cookies every day, and the milk bottles had caps with different US presidents on them!

I lived too close to ride the bus, so I'm sure we walked or a neighbor droves us. I loved these group pictures, I have one of myself in the 2nd grade, and one of my dad, who attended the same school, when he was in the 7th grade (I think). Reading was my favorite subject, and probably learning cursive. We had the best librarian who really nurtured my love of reading.

Wow, Mary. 1969. I was in 10th grade!! As for my FIRST day of school -- I don't really remember it much. I remember the smell of paste and I remember a little boy in my class ate a yellow crayon (not on the first day, but at some point that year). His mouth and teeth had little pieces of yellow crayon all over them!! Hahaha! What's with the boys?

In your photo, you do look a bit apprehensive. Wonder if the little girl next to you in the group photo was a Brownie??

I went to three different kindergartens and, while not traumatic, not all that memorable either. I do remember first grade, with Mrs. Kelly (the best first grade teacher in the world!), and dresses... I think I was in 6th grade when girls were finally allowed to wear pants to school!
