Borrowing Books.

...a sure Day to Celebrate - Today, I borrowed my first ebook from the library. When I queued all six of the Flavia de Luce books last weekend, I figured it was a very long shot I'd be able to read them in order. But #6 arrived first, followed the next day by #4 and #5 and I knew I couldn't do it that out of order. I called the library to release the holds. I was sure I'd pickup the series ... later.

So I was delighted to see the email this afternoon about #1 being available...as an ebook. I only hope I can finish it in 14 days (when I guess it turns into a pumpkin and disappears?)

...and then I have #2 and #3 coming...but I'm going to have to re-subscribe to 4,5 and 6.

Is it just me (or my library) or is library reading harder than I remember?

p.s. I read the first chapter and I'm delighted...anticipate no issues finishing this first one in 14 days!

That's great! I LOVE borrowing audiobooks via OverDrive, and the occasional ebook if audio isn't available. I think each library can set up their own parameters, but mine allows me to change the borrowing period (7, 14, or 21 days) before I check out so yours might do the same if you're concerned about not being able to finish something. One of my libraries also has an option to "suspend holds" which might have worked for #4 ,5, and 6. I've never done it, but I think it allows you to put your hold on hold without losing your place in the queue. In my experience, a borrowed book will stay on my Kindle even after the loan period, until I connect to wifi. Audiobooks are even better; they seem to stay in itunes and on my ipod until I delete them. This is true for the mp3 versions; I think OverDrive is phasing out wma so I don't borrow many of those any more. Sorry for my long rambling and happy reading!

Bonny has great advice there. We let patrons change the borrowing privilege on ebooks and you can have one for up to 21 days. You can also suspend holds and that would help with getting them in the right order. I have heard, but I have no tested it myself, that a book won't go away from your kindle if you don't "close" it out.

Bonny has the library lending down pat and I agree with everything she and Carole have to say. I usually get two-three books at a time to finish and then add the next in the series. Library lending can be a juggle at times, but you'll get them all eventually! Enjoy!

I think it's harder because you have more options- videos, ebooks, downloadable audio books, etc. I still love browsing the shelves though.

For me, getting books from the library is harder - because I no longer work there! It was so convenient to pick up books and return them before I left for the day! Now I have to specifically make a trip. I hate due dates though - that part has always bugged me - LOL! I've yet to get a e-book - but maybe one of these days I'll try it out!
