Daily Yoga | January.

...I just shared this photo on Instagram. All those little green and blue circles are making me smile!

Green means I took a class (at the Y) and blue means I did a routine with the Yoga Studio app on my iPad. This morning I took a look back at January:

  • 17 classes
  • 14 Yoga Studio sessions
  • 1,500 minutes (25 hours! this number surprised me. that's 25 hours I didn't read or knit or walk or do anything except yoga. I'm honestly not sure I can commit to that much time each month, but I want to try.)

I'm slowly starting to see progress. A little more flexibility (I can get all the way into child's pose at the beginning of my practice; I still can't do a forward fold, though, with anything close to straight legs). A little more upper body strength. A little more balance. And best of all, no pain! I haven't run since the fall; I'm sure that's helped me stretch out and given my knees a much-needed rest.

One of my biggest surprises has been how much better I'm sleeping. Nine of those 14 Yoga Studio sessions were the "15 minute Intermediate Relaxation", which I do just before bed. I have much fewer "restless" minutes (my Fitbit records this :-) and almost no "awake" minutes those nights.  It's awesome!

332 more days to go. Taking them each one day at a time.  So far the results have been worth the time. As long as that continues, I'm going to stick with it!

As a long (long) time yoga person, I think you couldn't have picked a better daily practice! You will see great changes in flexibility, balance, and strength as you keep up your yoga practice. What an awesome activity to choose!

I've tried yoga and I feel like I'm too Type A for it - I have a really hard time just slowing down and moving through the poses as I want to just get it done. Hannah says that's exactly why I NEED to do yoga! Good for you for putting your intentions into practice!

I like this simple but effective way of recording your progress and I'm even more impressed with your 25 hours! I've never done yoga, but after shoveling heavy, wet snow yesterday, my back is screaming at me to at least give it a try. Keep up the good work!

You've created a habit and a daily habit, or practice of yoga is good one to choose. You've already found many benefits of stretching and finding your calm spirit. Good for you in sticking with it all month. I know you'll have a calendar full of green and blue dots come the end of the year!

Yoga is something I wish I'd started when I was younger, not that it's too late now, but having that practice would have been a huge help in my daily life. Good for you on your stick-to-it-ness.

Way to go! I struggled with my #habitprogress goal of daily yoga during the last half of January. Hopping back on the yoga train though! Going to check out the yoga studio app (thanks for sharing!). How did you track your time? 25 hours is impressive!

This is impressive, Mary! I need to exercise more at home. I go to a class three days a week, which is a mix of spinning, weight training, Pilates, and a boot camp type routine (hard)!!! I always feel so much better on the days I go. I am going to find the tracker you use and get going!!

Thanks, Liz! I'm using a moleskine journal to track my daily progress. I include the duration there, so all I did was add up the minutes to get that total. The yoga studio app also displays a nice calendar that shows the "classes" you did and the time.

IMPRESSIVE!! I committed to 2 days of strength training per week just for the month of January (so I wouldn't overwhelm myself with the commitment). I DID IT!! So, I decided to do the same for February. That's in addition to my daily treadmill work. Since my hobby is so sedentary, I feel I HAVE to get on the treadmill daily or my limbs would "freeze up!" ;-)

Keep up the good work!! And I still keep saying . . . "I really should get back to yoga . . ."
