times two.

Saturday, February 19, 2011

a quick hello.

...from LA where we're having a great time! taking plenty of photos*

gotta love the holly (wood) sign.

seeing the sights - from the griffith observatory - a fun walk and fabulous views

with cocktails.

and pretty coffees.

and back to back to back episodes of true blood when it's raining.

*but photoshop on my computer isn't behaving very well...so these are the only ones I have to share so far. hoping maybe a good charge on the battery helps and I'll try again later today.

10 favorite non-knitting blogs.

...hummmm... I just realized that none of the blogs in my "daily reads" folder are knitting blogs. I used to have the Yarn Harlot there, but I moved her to "knitters" a while back. and I have "designers" and a folder for my knitting blogger friends. so I definitely read knitting blogs, but the blogs I turn to for inspiration aren't about knitting. (and I wonder if maybe that's because of ravelry and all the project sharing there?)

1. ali edwards - scrapbooker extraordinaire. inspiration galore. lovely handwriting.
2. culinary memoirs of a soulful college girl - sara's blog. it always brightens my day to see a new post from her.
3. the sixth borougher - katie's blog. ditto the day-brightener.
4. [i] love life. kal barteski lives in winnepeg and loves winter. and her husband, two dogs and three daughters. she's an artist with a bulletproof attitude.
5. the sartorialist. fun peeks into cool lifestyles - and clothing - that are so very different from my own.
6. the pioneer woman cooks. sara just had me subscribe to her "lifestyle" blog, too. she's hilarious. and she can cook, and take great photos, and write about it all.
7. bits&pieces. cathy zielske, another inspiring scrapbooker.
8. oh joy! pretty to look at. and she moved from philadelphia to LA about the time katie did. when she shares tidbits about her LA life, I feel a connection to katie....
9. a cup of jo. joanna goddard writes for glamour magazine. she lives in new york, married with a baby. and blogs about all kinds of things - a nice mix of personal and lifestyle and travel.
10. kim klassen cafe. gorgeous photographs. inspiring me to learn more about photoshop.

be honest.

...really (says holly). does this make my hiney look big?

I think she must think so, otherwise she'd look right into the camera when I tried to take her photo, right?!

this is the most fun I've had knitting in a while - a quick project with a well-written pattern, gorgeous yarn and very cute results!!

raveled here.

a healthier muffin.

...I'll put the disclaimer up front - the recipe that follows is based off of one from paula deen. healthier is all about the context!
I've had practice with substituting. the carrot ring recipe that is a star on our thanksgiving table was "rewritten" (a nod to sara's post that I'm putting that word in quotes :-) when I first learned about taking unnecessary sugar and fat out of recipes. but this recipe from paula didn't have eggs or shortening. instead it had two cups of sugar and two sticks of butter. I read through the reviews on the food network site and loved the idea to substitute vanilla yogurt for butter+sugar. another nod to health, I also sub'd some whole wheat flour. I'm not sure how my recipe works out in terms of numbers, except that it makes 24 full sized muffins. that keep great in the freezer - I pull out one each morning and microwave it for 45 seconds. it's a delicious breakfast.

healthier apple muffins
adapted from paula deen
makes 24 full-sized muffins

1 cup water
1 cup sugar
2 cups grated apples (2 apples, peeled, cored and grated coarsely on the box grater - I've used granny smith and fiji and both have worked fine)
1 cup raisins
1 cup dried cranberries
1/2 cup (1 stick) butter
2 teaspoons cinnamon
2 teaspoons nutmeg
1/2 teaspoon ground cloves
6 oz nonfat vanilla yogurt
1 cup chopped nuts, optional (I've made these with no nuts and with pecans and they've been great both times - paula's recipe calls for walnuts - I say, your choice!)
2 teaspoons baking soda
2 cups all-purpose flour
1-1/2 cups whole wheat flour

preheat the oven to 350 degrees F. grease 24 full-sized muffin tins (or line with papers).

combine water, sugar, apples, raisins, cranberries, butter, cinnamon, nutmeg and cloves in a saucepan over medium high heat; bring to a boil, stirring occasionally. remove the pan from the heat and cool completely (30 minutes or so?) stir in the yogurt.

in a large bowl, stir the nuts and baking soda into the flour, add the cooled liquid mixture to the bowl and stir until blended. fill muffin tins. bake for 15 minutes.

making me smile.

...despite the cold, wet cold...
♥ holly's new raincoat keeps her a little bit drier.
♥ the forecast for today shows clearing and warmer temperatures.
♥ it's saturday. and I have plans to knit. and cook dinner. and enjoy some time with marc.
♥ and take another walk in the park.

10 things on my bedside table.

...the "table" is really a chair - a small chair from my grandmother. made from pecan wood, with a caned seat that I think she mended. I LOVE that the chair has a story. and that it's not big enough for me to keep too much piled on top!
mostly it's books, a pair of readers (of course!) and lotions I use at night:

1. the readers.

2. the world according to bertie - the fourth book in the 44 scotland street series - and what I'm currently reading. I'm about halfway through it and really enjoying it.

3. talking to god.

4. the great house - a christmas gift and likely the next up in my queue after bertie.

5. cetaphil lotion.

6. chapstick. the good old fashioned kind in the black tube with the white top, unflavored.

7. aveda hand and foot relief.

8. a pair of white cotton gloves to keep the lotion in (I only use these when marc's away, promise!)

9. more books! (sarah's key, sarum and the outlander, all awaiting their turn to rise to the top of the queue!)

10. ...and missing from this photo, because I took it yesterday afternoon, is my iphone, which I use as an alarm clock.
